Tom Hinckley

Tom Hinckley

Manager of Offline Captioning, LA

In the Los Angeles office, which celebrated its first birthday in July 2001, Tom Hinckley deals with all matters related to captioning as it relates to CaptionMax on the west coast.

Tom came to CaptionMax with more than a decade of experience servicing the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing community. For eight years, he was with the National Captioning Institute, where he rose from the position of caption editor to swing shift supervisor before moving over to CaptionMax in July 2000. Prior to that, he worked as a communications assistant for the California Relay Service. In that position, he was a go-between on telephone calls between deaf and hard of hearing TDD users and hearing callers using a conventional telephone. His job involved reading the TDD communications to the hearing caller and typing their responses back on a PC configured to the task.

What initially attracted Tom to captioning was that with pre-recorded programs, unlike relay calls, he could stop and play back anything he couldn't hear or understand. It also helped that captioning played to Tom's experience as a film critic and journalist specializing in film and cable television. For more than ten years, his byline appeared in a wide range of publications from the alternative Philadelphia City Paper to the very mainstream Hollywood Reporter.
