Derek was raised in a small town called Waseca, MN. He studied English and film in a revolving door of colleges and somehow ended up with an audio production degree. Outside of CaptionMax, Derek works as a sound designer for local theater companies, as well as a music producer and engineer.

He enjoys the following, (in no particular order): Soldering, Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, film noir, The Clash, Alfred Hitchcock films, Halloween (the day, not the film), dark beer, red wine, JD Salinger, rock music in general, sleeping, and spending time with his lovely ladyfriend.

In addition, he knows more about The Beatles and Star Wars than most people should. Also, for reasons unbeknownst to him, he can recall all of the members' names of the following bands: Poison, Motley Crue, Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura, and Skid Row.

He lives in Minneapolis with a Siamese cat named Zooey.
