Accuracy

Our captioners aim for 98% accuracy not only in the way they spell the words, but in how the words are displayed. Realtime captioners' steno machines are phonetic. This means that the captioner has to insert additional strokes to distinguish between "board" and "bored," as the words are phonetically identical. If the captioner encounters a unique name of a place or person, the captioner has to create a new entry for that spelling in his or her dictionary. That is why we strive to assign the same captioners for a particular show, particularly regional news.
